Having a pet is a big responsibility. We need to make sure we provide them with a safe place to live, healthy food, exercise and of course, lots of love. Dogs, just like people, can be sensitive to certain foods and have some allergies. I have heard people say their dogs will eat just about anything, any brand of dog food or table scraps and their dogs are just fine – and that may be true.
I think of my dog in a different way – as part of my family. When I go to the market to buy food for my family I try to choose healthy, wholesome foods. Well, I do the exact same thing for my dog. I read the dog food labels and try to choose the ones that are made with healthy ingredients. Not the ones that are pretending to be healthy but are filled with all kinds of by-products, fillers, preservatives and a lot of things I can’t even pronounce.
A lot of the allergies and digestive problems dogs develop come from their food. I’m not even talking about the ones we know are dangerous to dogs – chocolate, onions, avocado, alcohol, coffee, tea, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, gum, fat trimmings, bones, raw eggs, yeast dough and raw meat and fish. The problems mostly come from the additives, preservatives and fillers used in some dog foods and treats.
The good health of your dog begins with proper nutrition, regardless of price or convenience of acquisition. Provide your furry friend fresh water, a healthy dog food and healthy snacks.
